Artistic freedom is essential for authentic beauty to emerge.
When I first read this beautiful thought by Wassily Kandinsky, I felt a sudden lightness in my chest. To say there is no must in art because art is free is to remind us that creativity doesn't follow a rulebook or a set of rigid instructions. It is an invitation to let go of the pressure to be perfect and to instead embrace the messy, wonderful spontaneity of expression. Art is the one place where we don't have to answer to anyone else's expectations, where the only boundary is our own imagination.
In our everyday lives, however, we often carry a heavy backpack full of 'musts.' We feel we must hit certain milestones by a certain age, we must follow a specific career path, or we must always present a polished version of ourselves to the world. These invisible rules can make life feel like a chore rather than an adventure. We start to view our passions through the lens of productivity, asking ourselves if what we are doing is useful or if it follows the 'correct' way to live, inadvertently stifling the very spark that makes us feel alive.
I remember a time when I was trying to learn how to bake something quite complex. I was so focused on following every single measurement and timing instruction perfectly that I forgot to actually enjoy the smell of the cinnamon or the warmth of the kitchen. I was treating baking like a math exam rather than a creative joy. It wasn't until I decided to stop worrying about the 'musts' and just let myself experiment with flavors that the kitchen truly felt like a sanctuary again. That shift from perfectionism to playfulness changed everything for me.
We can apply this same artistic freedom to how we approach our daily joys. Whether you are gardening, cooking, writing in a journal, or even just arranging flowers in a vase, try to strip away the pressure of doing it 'right.' Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes and the freedom to wander off the beaten path. There is so much beauty to be found when we stop trying to master the rules and start simply experiencing the moment.
Today, I want to encourage you to find one small area in your life where you can declare a 'no must' zone. Pick up a brush, a pen, or a kitchen utensil, and let your spirit lead the way without any fear of judgment.
