Have you ever had that nagging feeling in your chest that you are playing it safe? Michelangelo’s words remind us that the real tragedy in life isn't failing to reach the stars, but settling for the ground beneath our feet. When we set goals that are easy to achieve, we might feel a momentary sense of accomplishment, but that satisfaction is often hollow. The true danger lies in the comfort of a life that is far too small for the person we are meant to become. It is much easier to aim low because the risk of falling is minimal, but in doing so, we rob ourselves of the chance to truly grow.
In our everyday lives, this often shows up in the way we approach our careers, our hobbies, or even our relationships. We might stay in a job that doesn't challenge us because it is predictable, or we might avoid sharing our true passions because we are afraid of being judged. We choose the path of least resistance, thinking we are being practical, when in reality, we are just avoiding the beautiful stretch that happens when we reach for something difficult. We settle for a version of success that doesn't actually make our hearts sing.
I remember a time when I was working on a very large project for the DuckyHeals community. I was feeling quite overwhelmed, so I initially decided to set a very small, simple goal just to get it over with. I thought, if I just do the bare minimum, I can finish quickly and avoid the stress. But as I sat there with my notebook, I realized that by aiming low, I was actually making myself feel more uninspired and bored than if I had embraced the challenge. I decided to pivot, raise my expectations, and push myself to create something truly meaningful. The extra effort was hard, but the joy I felt when I finished was incomparable to the hollow feeling of a low-effort win.
It is okay to feel intimidated by big dreams. In fact, that intimidation is often a sign that you are finally aiming high enough to matter. When your goals scare you just a little bit, it means you are standing on the edge of something transformative. Don't be afraid of the possibility of missing the mark; instead, be afraid of hitting a target that doesn't even require you to try.
Today, I want to encourage you to look at your current list of goals. Is there something you have been shrinking down to make it feel more manageable? Try expanding it. Take one small step toward that higher, scarier, more beautiful ambition. You might miss, but the view from the climb is always worth it.
