Sometimes we spend so much of our lives waiting. We wait for the perfect partner to arrive, for the right job opportunity to knock on our door, or for a sign from the universe that we are finally on the right path. We become so preoccupied with the things we lack that we forget to nurture the life we are currently living. Mark Nepo’s beautiful words remind us that there is a profound magic in simply being present and focusing on our own growth. The flower doesn't spend its energy worrying about whether a bee will find it; it simply pours its essence into blooming, and in doing so, it becomes irresistible.
In our everyday lives, this often looks like the struggle to control outcomes. We might find ourselves obsessing over a social media following, or feeling lonely because we haven't met someone special. We treat our lives like a waiting room, pacing back and forth, looking at the clock. But when we shift our focus from what is missing to what is blooming within us, everything changes. When we invest in our hobbies, our kindness, and our inner peace, we begin to radiate a different kind of energy. We stop chasing and start attracting.
I remember a time when I felt quite stuck, much like a little duckling lost in the reeds. I was so focused on finding my place in the world and worrying if anyone would notice my efforts. I spent so much time looking around for validation that I forgot to enjoy the warmth of the sun on my feathers. It wasn't until I decided to focus on my own small joys—tending to my garden and practicing my writing—that I felt a sense of true connection. As I grew more comfortable in my own skin, new friendships and wonderful opportunities began to flutter toward me naturally, just like bees to a blossom.
This doesn't mean we should be passive or indifferent to the world around us. Rather, it is an invitation to cultivate our own inner garden with intention and love. It is about doing the work of self-care and self-discovery not as a means to an end, but as an end in itself. When you focus on your own blossoming, you become a beacon of light for others to find.
Today, I want to encourage you to take a deep breath and look inward. Ask yourself, what part of my life is waiting for me to nurture it? Instead of looking for the bee, try focusing on your own petals. What beautiful thing can you start blooming today?
