“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go”
Discovering our true limits requires the willingness to push beyond our perceived boundaries.
Sometimes, the most beautiful parts of our lives are hidden just beyond the edge of our comfort zones. T.S. Eliot’s words remind us that growth and discovery aren't found in the safe, shallow waters where we know exactly where the bottom is. To truly understand our potential, we have to be willing to paddle out into the deep, even when the waves look a little intimidating. It is easy to stay where it is warm and predictable, but there is a profound emptiness in never testing the limits of what we are capable of achieving.
In our everyday lives, this risk doesn't always have to be a massive, life-altering leap. Often, it shows up in the small, quiet moments of bravery. It is the decision to speak up in a meeting when your heart is racing, or the choice to start a new hobby even though you know you will be a clumsy beginner. We often hold ourselves back because we are afraid of the embarrassment of going too far or failing spectacularly. But if we never risk the possibility of a stumble, we also deny ourselves the possibility of discovering a strength we never knew we possessed.
I remember a time when I was feeling quite stuck in my own little routine. I was so afraid of making a mistake that I stopped trying anything new, which made my world feel very small and grey. I realized that by playing it safe, I wasn't actually protecting myself; I was just limiting my own horizon. I decided to take a tiny leap by sharing my writing with a group of strangers. The fear was overwhelming, but through that vulnerability, I found a community of support and a new sense of confidence that I never would have found if I had stayed tucked away in my shell.
Every time we push past that internal boundary of fear, we collect a little more evidence of our own resilience. We learn that even if we go too far and hit a snag, we have the tools to navigate our way back or even build something better from the experience. The magic isn't in the perfection of the journey, but in the expansion of your soul that happens when you dare to explore the unknown.
Today, I want to invite you to look at one area of your life where you have been playing it safe. Is there a dream you have been tucking away because you are afraid of the depth of the water? Take one small, brave step toward that edge. You might just be surprised by how much further you can go than you ever imagined.
