🌿 Nature
“To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things.”

Dogen teaches that dissolving ego boundaries allows nature to illuminate our true nature.

Have you ever sat in a park and suddenly realized that you weren't just a person watching the trees, but a part of the breeze itself? Dogen’s beautiful words suggest that true understanding comes when we stop obsessing over our own small dramas and instead lose ourselves in the vastness of the world around us. When we study the self, we often get stuck in a loop of our own worries, our names, and our egos. But there is a profound magic that happens when we finally let that heavy backpack of 'me' and 'mine' slip off our shoulders.

In our daily lives, we spend so much energy building up our identities. We worry about our reputations, our successes, and our failures. We become so preoccupied with the internal monologue in our heads that the vibrant, living world starts to look like nothing more than a blurry background. We are physically present, but mentally, we are trapped in a tiny room made of our own thoughts. This quote invites us to open the windows and doors of that room, allowing the entire universe to flow in and illuminate us.

I remember a Tuesday afternoon when I felt particularly overwhelmed by my own to-do lists and anxieties. I was sitting by a small pond, feeling very much like a tiny, stressed-out duck, if you will. I was so focused on my own fluttering heart that I didn't even notice the dragonfly hovering over a lily pad. But then, I took a deep breath and consciously decided to stop thinking about my tasks. I began to watch the ripples in the water and the way the sunlight danced on the surface. In that moment of letting go, the heavy feeling of my 'self' vanished, and I felt a sudden, sparkling connection to everything around me. The world felt bright, alive, and deeply meaningful.

This kind of enlightenment doesn't require a mountain retreat or years of silent meditation; it can happen in the middle of a grocery store aisle or while washing the dishes. It happens whenever we shift our gaze from our internal struggles to the simple, breathtaking reality of the present moment. When we stop trying to define ourselves, we become much more capable of experiencing the beauty of the 'ten thousand things.'

Today, I want to encourage you to find one small moment to let yourself disappear. Whether it is watching a bird build a nest or feeling the warmth of a cup of tea in your hands, try to look past your own thoughts. See if you can find that quiet space where you and the world become one.
