🌸 Kindness
“If you want others to be happy practice compassion if you want to be happy practice compassion and kindness”

Compassionate kindness creates happiness for both self and others.

When I first read these words by the Dalai Lama, they felt like a gentle hug for the soul. It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that happiness is something we must chase, something we must hunt down in our achievements or our possessions. But this quote suggests a beautiful, hidden shortcut. It tells us that the key to our own joy isn't found by looking inward with greed, but by looking outward with love. When we extend compassion to the world, we aren't just helping others; we are actually tending to the garden of our own hearts, allowing our own happiness to bloom.

In our busy, modern lives, it is so easy to become wrapped up in our own stresses and to view others as mere background characters in our personal dramas. We get caught in traffic, we worry about deadlines, and we become focused on our own discomfort. But there is a profound shift that happens when we decide to notice the person next to us. When we choose to be kind, even when we are tired, we break the cycle of self-centered anxiety. We realize that kindness is a circular energy; what we send out into the universe has a way of finding its way back to us in the most unexpected ways.

I remember a particularly rainy Tuesday when I was feeling quite overwhelmed and grumpy. I was sitting in a small cafe, huffing at the slow service and feeling quite lonely. I decided to make a small effort to change my mood. I looked at the barista, who looked just as exhausted as I felt, and gave her a genuine, warm smile and a sincere thank you. That tiny moment of connection changed the entire atmosphere for me. I felt a sudden lightness, a sense of warmth that stayed with me long after I left. By practicing compassion toward her, I had inadvertently rescued myself from my own gloom.

This doesn't mean you have to perform grand, heroic gestures to make a difference. Compassion lives in the smallest spaces. It is in the patient way you listen to a friend, the gentle way you speak to yourself when you make a mistake, or the simple decision to hold the door for a stranger. These small ripples of kindness create waves of peace that eventually reach your own shores.

Today, I want to encourage you to look for one small opportunity to be kind. It could be a text to someone you miss or a moment of patience with a difficult colleague. As you practice this, pay close attention to how your own heart feels. You might just find that the happiness you have been seeking was waiting for you all along, tucked inside a simple act of care.
