🔄 Change
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”

Fuller advocates creating superior alternatives rather than fighting what already exists.

Sometimes, life feels like a heavy tug-of-war. We find ourselves locked in a struggle with a situation that just won't budge, whether it is a difficult habit, a draining relationship, or a job that leaves us feeling empty. We pour all our energy into fighting the reality of the moment, hoping that if we push hard enough, the old structure will finally break. But as Buckminster Fuller beautifully reminds us, fighting the existing reality rarely leads to lasting transformation. True change doesn't come from destruction or combat; it comes from creation. It happens when we stop focusing on the wall in front of us and start designing a door.

I think about this often when I am working in my little garden. There was a time when I was so frustrated by the stubborn weeds that kept popping up in my flower beds. I spent weeks pulling them, spraying them, and feeling so angry at the soil for being so difficult. I was entirely focused on the battle against the weeds. It was exhausting and, honestly, quite lonely. I was so caught up in the struggle that I forgot to actually tend to the flowers. I was fighting the reality of a messy garden instead of building a healthier one.

Everything changed when I shifted my perspective. Instead of focusing on the weeds, I started focusing on the nutrients, the sunlight, and the variety of plants I wanted to see. I began building a new model for my garden by adding mulch, improving the compost, and planting flowers that thrive in those specific conditions. Eventually, the environment became so supportive of the new life that the weeds simply couldn't compete anymore. They didn't disappear because I fought them; they became obsolete because the new reality I built was much stronger and more inviting.

We can apply this same magic to our own lives. If you are feeling stuck, take a deep breath and step back from the struggle. Ask yourself: instead of trying to fix what is broken, what can I start building today? What new habit, new routine, or new way of thinking can I introduce that makes the old, painful pattern no longer necessary? It is much more peaceful to build something beautiful than it is to fight something difficult. I invite you to look away from the struggle today and start sketching the blueprints for your new, wonderful reality.
