“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness.”

Thich Nhat Hanh connects the chain from releasing to freedom to lasting happiness.

There is a heavy, invisible weight that we often carry around without even realizing it. It is the weight of old grudges, the sting of past mistakes, and the tight grip we keep on things that are simply meant to pass. When Thich Nhat Hanh says that letting go gives us freedom, he is reminding us that our hands cannot embrace the beauty of the present moment if they are too busy clutching onto the shadows of yesterday. True happiness is not found in accumulating more, but in the lightness that comes when we finally decide to release what no longer serves our soul.

In our everyday lives, this letting go doesn't always look like a grand, dramatic gesture. More often, it is a quiet, internal decision made in the middle of a mundane afternoon. It is the decision to stop replaying an argument that happened three days ago, or the choice to stop comparing your progress to someone else's highlight reel on social media. We often mistake holding on for strength, thinking that if we just grip our anxieties tighter, we can control the outcome. But true strength is found in the courage to loosen our fingers and trust the flow of life.

I remember a time when I felt stuck in a loop of my own making. I was holding onto a version of myself that I thought I needed to be—someone perfectly composed, never making mistakes, and always in control. Every time I stumbled, I would punish myself with heavy thoughts, carrying that guilt like a backpack full of stones. It wasn't until I sat quietly and acknowledged that my mistakes were just lessons, rather than permanent stains on my character, that I felt my shoulders finally drop. That moment of release didn't change my circumstances, but it changed my entire experience of them. I felt lighter, more capable, and much more capable of finding joy in the small things.

As you move through your week, I want to invite you to take a gentle inventory of your heart. Is there a resentment you are tired of feeding? Is there a regret that is making your spirit feel heavy? You don't have to let everything go all at once, but perhaps you can start with just one small thing. Take a deep breath, exhale that old weight, and see how much more room you have to breathe, to smile, and to truly live.
