Our essential nature remains unchanged regardless of the karmic storms that pass through.
Have you ever looked up at a vast, blue sky and felt a sudden sense of peace, even if a storm was brewing just on the horizon? That is the magic behind Pema Chodron's beautiful words. When we say we are the sky, we are acknowledging that our core essence is something much larger, steadier, and more permanent than the passing clouds of our emotions. The weather—the anger, the sadness, the anxiety, or even the moments of pure joy—is constantly shifting. It moves through us, but it does not define us. We are the container that holds it all, the silent witness that remains unchanged by the wind.
In our daily lives, it is so easy to mistake a rainy day for our entire identity. When a difficult project fails at work or a misunderstanding happens with a friend, we tend to say, 'I am sad' or 'I am a failure.' We let the heavy, dark clouds of these moments settle deep into our bones, forgetting that we are actually the wide, open space where these feelings are simply passing through. We become so caught up in the turbulence of the storm that we forget we have the capacity to simply breathe and wait for the clouds to drift away.
I remember a time when I felt like a tiny, shivering bird caught in a blizzard. Everything felt overwhelming, and I was convinced that this cold, lonely feeling would be my forever. I was so focused on the biting wind of my worries that I couldn't see anything else. But slowly, as I practiced sitting quietly with my discomfort, I realized that the wind was moving, but I was still there, tucked safely beneath the surface. The storm was intense, yes, but it was happening within me, not to me. I was the sky, and the blizzard was just a temporary visitor.
Next time you feel a wave of overwhelming emotion washing over you, try to take a deep breath and visualize that vast, blue expanse. Remind yourself that this feeling, no matter how heavy or dark it seems, is just weather. It is passing through, and it cannot change the fundamental beauty of who you are. You are much more resilient and much more permanent than any storm you will ever face.
I want to encourage you today to find a moment of stillness. When a difficult thought arises, instead of fighting it, try to simply observe it passing through your sky. Can you find even just a tiny sliver of blue behind the clouds today?
