“Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it.”
You don't always have to push hard to be powerful. Sometimes the most resilient thing you can do is keep flowing, gently and persistently, until nothing can stop you.
Have you ever stopped to really look at a stream trickling over stones? There is something so incredibly peaceful about the way water moves. It doesn't fight the rock in its path; it doesn't try to push the mountain out of the way with brute force. Instead, it simply finds a new way around, a tiny gap, or a soft path downward. Margaret Atwood’s beautiful words remind us that true strength doesn't always look like a loud, crashing wave. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can be is fluid, moving through life's obstacles with a gentle persistence that eventually reshapes everything in its path.
In our daily lives, we often feel like we have to be rigid to survive. We think that if we don't stand our ground with clenched fists, we might be swept away by the chaos of work, family stress, or unexpected changes. We treat every obstacle like a wall that must be broken down. But that kind of resistance is so exhausting, isn't it? It leaves us feeling brittle and worn out. When we try to force life to go exactly our way, we end up clashing with reality, creating friction that only causes us more pain and fatigue.
I remember a time when I felt like a tiny dam trying to hold back a massive flood of responsibilities. I was so determined to control every single outcome that I ended up feeling completely stuck and overwhelmed. I was fighting every little change, and it was making me miserable. It wasn't until I decided to stop resisting the changes I couldn't control and instead started looking for the small openings—the new opportunities that emerged from the mess—that I felt the pressure lift. I learned that by letting go of the need to control, I could actually move forward much more effectively.
Being like water means trusting that you have the inherent power to navigate through whatever comes your way. It is about finding that balance between being soft enough to be kind to yourself and being persistent enough to keep moving toward your goals. You don't need to be an immovable object; you just need to keep flowing. Even when the path feels blocked, remember that water always finds a way, and so will you.
Today, I want to invite you to take a deep breath and notice where you might be holding onto unnecessary tension. Is there a situation in your life where you are fighting a battle that cannot be won through force? Perhaps you can try a different approach, one that is more about flowing and less about resisting. Just try letting the current carry you toward a new perspective, and see how much lighter you feel.
