When I first read Saint Augustine's words about loving without measure, I felt a little flutter in my chest. It is such a big, beautiful, and slightly intimidating idea. To love without measure means to let go of the scales we often use to weigh our affection. We tend to calculate how much we give versus how much we receive, or we hold back a piece of our heart just in case the other person doesn't return the sentiment with equal intensity. But true, profound love doesn't keep a ledger. It flows freely, like a river that doesn't stop to ask if the ocean is ready to receive it.
In our everyday lives, this looks much smaller and more subtle than a grand romantic gesture. It is found in the way we listen to a friend who is having a difficult day, even when we are tired ourselves. It is seen in the patience we show to a stranger who is being a bit difficult, or the way we care for a pet who offers nothing but silent companionship. Loving without measure is about the quality of our presence. It is about deciding that the well of our kindness is deep enough to share without worrying about running dry.
I remember a time when I was feeling quite overwhelmed with my own little duckling worries. I was so focused on my own tasks that I almost missed a neighbor who was struggling with some heavy gardening. I found myself calculating whether I had enough time to help or if I should just keep waddling toward my destination. But then I remembered that the most beautiful moments happen when we stop measuring our time and start measuring our compassion. I decided to stay and help, and that small, unmeasured act of service ended up brightening my entire afternoon more than any completed to-do list ever could.
We often think that being generous with our love makes us vulnerable to being hurt, but I believe it actually makes us whole. When we stop measuring, we stop living in fear of loss and start living in the abundance of what we can give. It allows us to experience the full spectrum of human connection.
Today, I want to gently nudge you to look for one small way to love without measure. Perhaps it is a warm text to someone you haven't spoken to in a while, or a moment of extra patience with yourself. See how it feels to let your heart overflow without checking the math first.
