Achieving simplicity requires tremendous effort and clear thinking
Sometimes we think that making something bigger, louder, or more complicated is the only way to show value. We pile on layers of detail, add extra steps to our routines, and fill our schedules with endless tasks, believing that complexity equals progress. But Steve Jobs reminds us with such profound truth that simple can actually be harder than complex. True simplicity requires a level of discipline and clarity that is much more demanding than just adding more stuff. It is about the courage to strip away the unnecessary until only the essential remains.
In our everyday lives, we see this struggle everywhere. We try to cook a meal by adding every spice in the pantry, only to lose the beautiful flavor of the fresh vegetables. We try to communicate our feelings by using big, heavy words, only to end up confusing the person we love. We often use complexity as a shield to hide our uncertainty, because it is much easier to hide behind a mess than it is to stand nakedly in the truth of a single, clear thought or action.
I remember a time when I was trying to organize a small community garden project. I had so many ideas that I created a massive, complicated spreadsheet with dozens of categories, timelines, and complicated rules. I thought I was being thorough, but I was actually just creating a barrier that made everyone too intimidated to help. It wasn't until I sat down, took a deep breath, and deleted everything except the three most important tasks that the garden actually started to grow. It was much harder to decide what to leave out than it was to keep adding more, but that simplicity was what saved the project.
When we face a mountain of overwhelm, the answer isn't to climb a more complicated path, but to find the simplest one. It takes immense strength to look at a chaotic situation and say, let us focus only on this one small, beautiful thing. It is a quiet kind of bravery that honors the essence of what matters most.
Today, I want to invite you to look at one area of your life that feels heavy or cluttered. Ask yourself if you can remove one layer of complexity. What would happen if you let go of just one unnecessary obligation or one extra worry? Try to find the beauty in the bare minimum, and see how much lighter your heart feels.
