“One can be instructed in society, one is inspired only in solitude.”
You learn facts from other people, but those lightning-bolt moments of clarity? Those tend to come when it's just you and your thoughts. Give yourself that quiet space — your best ideas are waiting there.
Have you ever felt like the world is just a bit too loud? We spend so much of our lives surrounded by voices, notifications, and the constant expectations of those around us. Goethe’s beautiful words remind us that while society can teach us the rules, the manners, and the logistics of living, it cannot spark the true fire within our souls. Instruction is about gathering information, but inspiration is something much more sacred. It is a quiet, internal spark that only has the space to catch fire when the external noise finally fades away.
In our modern, hyper-connected world, we often mistake being busy with being productive, and being social with being fulfilled. We attend workshops, read textbooks, and listen to endless podcasts, all of which provide us with the tools to function in society. But have you ever noticed that your most profound 'aha' moments rarely happen in the middle of a crowded coffee shop or during a heated meeting? They usually arrive when you are staring out a window, walking alone in the woods, or perhaps just sitting quietly with a cup of tea as the sun sets.
I remember a time when I was feeling quite overwhelmed by all the advice I was receiving. I was trying to learn so many new things, following every tutorial and piece of guidance I could find, yet I felt completely stuck and uninspired. It was only when I decided to take a weekend away from my phone and spend several hours sitting by a quiet pond that the clarity I needed finally drifted in. Without anyone to impress or any instructions to follow, my mind finally had the stillness required to dream again. It was in that silence that my true passion for writing resurfaced.
This doesn't mean we should withdraw from the world or avoid learning from others. Society provides the foundation upon which we build our lives. However, we must remember to carve out our own little sanctuaries of stillness. We need those moments of solitude to process what we have learned and to let our inner light find its own direction. Without solitude, we are merely following a map drawn by others, rather than discovering the landscape of our own hearts.
Today, I want to gently encourage you to find your own pocket of silence. Whether it is five minutes of deep breathing before the day begins or a long, solitary walk after dinner, give yourself permission to step away from the crowd. Ask yourself what your soul is trying to whisper to you when the world stops talking. You might be surprised by the beautiful inspirations waiting to greet you in the quiet.
