Thinking symbolizes human freedom. Be an eagle that advances through thought.
When I first read Nietzsche's words about man being a thinking eagle, I felt a little flutter of awe in my chest. It is such a powerful image, isn't it? An eagle doesn't just wander aimlessly through the grass; it soars high above the landscape, possessing a perspective that sees the intricate patterns of the forest and the winding paths of the rivers all at once. To be a thinking eagle means to use our intellect not just to survive, but to rise above our immediate impulses and see the bigger picture of our lives.
In our everyday lives, it is so easy to get stuck in the thicket of small worries. We spend so much time looking down at our feet, focusing on the tiny pebbles of daily stress, the minor inconveniences, or the sudden gusts of wind that try to knock us off balance. We become reactive rather than reflective. We react to a rude comment, we react to a missed deadline, and suddenly, our world feels very small and very crowded. We forget that we have the capacity to lift our gaze and find a much wider view.
I remember a time when I was feeling quite overwhelmed by a series of small mishaps. Everything seemed to be going wrong, and I felt like I was just scurrying around trying to fix leaks in a dam. I was so focused on the immediate chaos that I couldn't see that these challenges were actually teaching me how to be more resilient. It was only when I took a step back, breathed deeply, and tried to look at my situation from a distance that I realized the 'storm' was actually helping me grow stronger wings. I had to consciously choose to stop looking at the mud and start looking at the sky.
We all have this eagle within us, waiting for us to engage our minds and expand our horizons. Thinking is our way of ascending. It allows us to analyze, to dream, and to find meaning even in the most difficult terrain. When we use our thoughts to seek wisdom rather than just to worry, we begin to experience the true freedom that comes with a higher perspective.
Today, I want to encourage you to find a moment of stillness. When you feel the weight of the world pressing down on you, try to lift your eyes. Ask yourself what the larger lesson might be. Take one deep, soaring breath and see if you can find a view that is much wider than the problems right in front of you.
