When I first read the words that man is a learning animal, I felt a sudden sense of relief. It is so easy to feel stuck, as if we are finished products, permanently shaped by our mistakes or our current circumstances. But this quote reminds us that growth isn't just a luxury for the ambitious; it is a fundamental part of our very nature. To be human is to be in a constant state of becoming, forever reaching out to grasp new ideas, new skills, and new ways of understanding the world around us.
In our everyday lives, we often mistake learning for something that only happens in a classroom with heavy textbooks and stressful exams. We think that if we aren't studying a formal curriculum, we aren't growing. But true learning is much more organic than that. It is found in the way we learn to set boundaries, the way we discover a new recipe that brings joy to our kitchen, or even the way we learn to be more patient with ourselves on a difficult Tuesday afternoon. Every experience, even the messy ones, offers a lesson if we are willing to look for it.
I remember a time when I felt completely overwhelmed by a new hobby I wanted to try, much like how I sometimes feel when I try to learn a complex new way to express my feelings in my writing. I was so afraid of looking silly or failing that I almost didn't start at all. I kept telling myself that I simply wasn't 'built' for this kind of creativity. But then I realized that my frustration wasn't a sign of failure; it was the sound of my brain stretching. I had to embrace the awkward, clumsy beginner stage to eventually find the flow. Once I accepted that being a learner meant being allowed to be imperfect, the fear lost its power over me.
We are all works in progress, and there is so much beauty in that unfinished state. You don't need to have all the answers today, and you certainly don't need to be an expert in your own life. All you need is the curiosity to keep asking questions and the courage to try one small thing differently than you did yesterday. So, I want to encourage you to find one small area where you can be a student today. Whether it is listening more deeply to a friend or picking up a book on a subject you know nothing about, let your natural curiosity lead the way.
