“Life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.”
삶은 여행이야, 때론 험난하지만. 그러나 그 여정이 우리를 더 단단하게 만들어.
Sometimes, when we look at the path ahead of us, all we see are potholes, steep climbs, and stretches of bumpy, uncertain terrain. Oliver Goldsmith’s words remind us that while we cannot always choose the quality of the road, the most important thing is that we keep moving forward. Life isn't a luxury cruise where everything is smooth and predictable; it is a continuous trek through changing landscapes. There will be beautiful meadows, but there will also be muddy paths and storms that make us want to stop and hide away.
In our everyday lives, these bad roads often show up as unexpected setbacks, like a sudden job loss, a broken relationship, or a period of loneliness. It is so easy to become paralyzed by the discomfort of the journey. We tend to think that once the 'bad accommodations' are gone, then—and only then—will our real life begin. But the truth is that the journey itself is where our strength is forged. The bumps in the road are often the very things that teach us how to navigate with grace and resilience.
I remember a time when I felt like my own path was nothing but gravel and dust. I was working through a season of deep uncertainty, and every time I thought I had found a stable footing, another obstacle appeared. I felt stuck, waiting for a paved highway to appear out of nowhere. But as I sat with my thoughts, I realized that by waiting for perfection, I was actually missing the scenery around me. I had to learn to appreciate the small, quiet moments of beauty even while my feet were tired and the way forward was unclear.
It is okay to feel tired, and it is okay to acknowledge that the current road is difficult. You don't have to pretend that the bumpy parts don't hurt. However, please don't let the roughness of the terrain convince you to turn back or stop altogether. There is so much more to see beyond this current stretch of difficult road. Every step you take, no matter how heavy, is a victory in itself.
Today, I want to encourage you to just take the next small step. Don't worry about the miles of bumpy road ahead; just focus on the patch of ground right in front of you. Take a deep breath, find your footing, and trust that you have the strength to keep traveling. Where could you go if you simply refused to stop walking?
