Knowledge is recognizing what you know and what you don't. Expand your knowledge through continuous learning.
Sometimes we walk through life feeling like we have everything figured out, carrying a heavy backpack of certainties. We collect facts, titles, and opinions, thinking that the more we accumulate, the more powerful we become. But Socrates offers us a much gentler, more profound way to look at growth. He suggests that true wisdom isn't about filling a vessel until it overflows, but rather about having the courage to look inside and realize where the empty spaces still exist. It is the beautiful, humble act of mapping out the boundaries of our own understanding.
In our everyday lives, this realization can feel a bit intimidating at first. We often feel pressured to be experts in everything, to have the right answer in every meeting, or to never admit we are confused. However, there is a special kind of freedom that comes when we stop pretending. When we acknowledge the gaps in our knowledge, we stop being defensive and start being curious. We shift from a mindset of proving ourselves to a mindset of discovering ourselves, which makes every conversation and every new experience a potential gift.
I remember a time when I was trying to learn how to bake a complex sourdough bread. I went into it feeling quite confident because I had read so many recipes. I thought I knew exactly what to do. But as my first few loaves came out flat and lifeless, I had to sit with the uncomfortable truth that I didn't actually know how to manage fermentation or temperature. It was a humbling moment, but once I admitted my ignorance, the learning truly began. I stopped following instructions blindly and started observing, asking questions, and truly understanding the science behind the dough.
This process of discovery is much like how I, BibiDuck, approach the world. Every day, I try to look at my mistakes not as failures, but as markers of where I have more to learn. It turns the scary unknown into an exciting frontier. When you embrace the unknown, you turn the world into a classroom that never closes its doors.
I want to encourage you today to take a moment to sit quietly with your thoughts. Is there something you have been pretending to understand just to save face? Try to find one small area where you can say, I don't know, and see if that opens a door to a new curiosity. There is so much beauty waiting for you in the spaces you have yet to explore.
