Have you ever felt like you were walking in circles, trying every door only to find them all locked? It can be so incredibly discouraging when we pour our heart and soul into a project, a relationship, or a personal goal, only to face a wall of rejection or error. Thomas Edison’s famous words remind us that what we often label as failure is actually just a collection of lessons. Each mistake is not a dead end, but rather a piece of data that narrows our path toward the right solution. It is about shifting our perspective from seeing a loss to seeing progress.
In our everyday lives, this shift in mindset is much harder than it sounds. We live in a world that celebrates the finished masterpiece but rarely shows the messy, frustrating sketches that came before it. We see the success, but we don't see the thousands of tiny, quiet disappointments that paved the way. When we are in the thick of a struggle, it feels like we are losing ground, but every time something doesn't work, we are actually gaining clarity. We are learning exactly what to avoid, which is just as important as learning what to embrace.
I remember a time when I was trying to learn how to bake the perfect loaf of sourdough bread. I spent weeks feeling like a complete disaster. My bread was too sour, too flat, or far too hard to chew. I felt like I simply didn't have the talent for it, and I was ready to throw my starter in the trash. But then I realized that every burnt crust was teaching me about oven temperature, and every flat loaf was teaching me about fermentation time. I wasn't failing at baking; I was simply documenting every way that didn't result in a delicious loaf. Eventually, the rhythm clicked, and the bread became wonderful.
It is okay to feel frustrated when things go wrong, but please try not to let that frustration turn into a belief that you are incapable. Instead, try to look at your recent setbacks as if you are a scientist conducting an experiment. Each unsuccessful attempt is just one more way you have successfully ruled out. You are getting closer to your breakthrough with every single attempt, even the ones that feel heavy and difficult.
Today, I want to encourage you to look back at a recent disappointment and ask yourself what it taught you. Instead of saying, I failed, try saying, I just learned something new. Take a deep breath and keep going, because your path is being refined with every step you take.
