Self-contradiction keeps creative practice fresh and evolving.

Sometimes, the most dangerous thing we can do is become too comfortable with our own patterns. When Marcel Duchamp spoke about forcing himself to contradict his own taste, he was touching on a profound truth about growth. It is so easy to settle into a predictable rhythm, to only listen to the music we already know, or to only pursue the ideas that feel safe and familiar. But when we stop challenging our own preferences, we stop evolving. We become stuck in a loop of our own making, surrounded by a world that is nothing more than an echo of our existing thoughts.

In our everyday lives, this often shows up as a subtle form of stagnation. We might find ourselves stuck in the same routine, eating the same foods, or surrounding ourselves with people who only ever agree with us. We think we are being consistent, but we might actually just be avoiding the discomfort of change. True creativity and personal expansion require us to occasionally step outside of what we like and explore what we might dislike, or what we previously dismissed. It is in that friction between the old self and the new possibility that real magic happens.

I remember a time when I was working on a special project for the DuckyHeals community. I had a very specific vision for a series of illustrations, and I was so attached to a certain soft, pastel aesthetic. I felt that anything else would simply not fit the mood I wanted to create. However, I realized that by clinging to my 'taste,' I was closing the door on much more vibrant, energetic ideas. I had to force myself to experiment with bold, clashing colors that felt entirely 'wrong' to my initial instincts. It was uncomfortable and felt quite messy at first, but that very contradiction led to the most beautiful and impactful work I have ever produced.

It takes a lot of courage to look at something you enjoy and say, 'I will try something else, even if it feels strange.' It is an invitation to be unpredictable and to keep your world from becoming too small. When we allow ourselves to contradict our established tastes, we open up a vast landscape of new perspectives and hidden talents.

Today, I want to encourage you to find one small area in your life where you feel too settled. Perhaps it is a genre of books you never touch, or a way of thinking you have always dismissed. Try to approach it with an open heart and a willingness to be surprised by your own reaction. You might just find a new version of yourself waiting in the contradiction.
