Kindness receives all of life without rejection or exclusion.
When I first read Richard Rohr’s words, I felt a little flutter in my chest, like a tiny bird finding a warm nest. To say that everything belongs and everything is received through kindness is such a profound way of looking at our place in this big, swirling universe. It suggests that kindness isn't just a polite gesture we use when we want something; rather, it is the very fabric that connects us to everything else. It is the bridge that allows us to truly inhabit our lives and feel at home in the world.
In our busy, everyday lives, it is so easy to feel like an outsider. We often move through our days feeling disconnected, as if we are just passing through a landscape that doesn't really know us. We focus on our checklists, our worries, and our small failures, forgetting that there is a much larger rhythm at play. But when we shift our focus toward kindness, the world begins to look different. The stranger at the grocery store, the grumpy neighbor, even the difficult moments in our own day, all start to feel like they have a place in our story. Kindness opens our hearts to receive the beauty that is already surrounding us.
I remember a particularly cloudy Tuesday when I was feeling quite lost and a bit lonely. I was sitting on a park bench, feeling like I didn't quite fit in with the bustling energy of the city around me. Then, a small child nearby dropped their ice cream and started to cry. Without thinking much about it, I walked over and offered a small, colorful sticker I had in my pocket to distract them. The child’s face transformed from sorrow to pure, bright wonder, and their parent gave me a smile that felt like a warm hug. In that tiny, simple moment, the heaviness of my loneliness vanished. I felt like I belonged to that moment, to that family, and to the park itself, all because of a small act of compassion.
Kindness acts as a gentle key that unlocks the doors to connection. When we approach our struggles, our neighbors, and even our own flaws with a spirit of kindness, we stop fighting against reality and start flowing with it. We begin to realize that we don't have to earn our place in this world; we simply need to be open enough to receive it through the love we give and the grace we allow ourselves to feel.
Today, I want to encourage you to look for one small way to practice this. Perhaps it is a warm word to a coworker or a moment of gentle patience with yourself when you make a mistake. Notice how the world feels a little more welcoming when you lead with kindness. You belong here, more than you know.
