“Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.”
Being a good person isn't enough if you're just sitting on the sidelines. Get out there and use your goodness to actually change something.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in following every single rule and being the perfect version of ourselves that we forget to actually live. When Thoreau speaks about not being too moral, he isn't suggesting we become unkind or dishonest. Instead, he is inviting us to look beyond a rigid checklist of right and wrong and instead seek a higher purpose. Being 'good' is easy when you are just following instructions, but being 'good for something' requires us to use our hearts and our unique talents to create real, meaningful impact in the world around us.
I think about this often when I see people paralyzed by the fear of making a mistake. We spend so much energy worrying if our actions are perfectly aligned with every societal expectation that we miss the beautiful, messy, and spontaneous moments that make life worth experiencing. We become so focused on being 'correct' that we lose our ability to be creative, adventurous, or even deeply vulnerable. There is a difference between being a person who never breaks a rule and a person who uses their strength to build something beautiful.
I remember a friend of mine who was so afraid of being judged or appearing 'improper' that she never shared her beautiful paintings with anyone. She followed all the social rules of being a quiet, unassuming person, but she was cheating herself out of the joy of connection. It wasn't until she decided to be 'good for something'—specifically, to use her art to bring comfort to others—that she truly started living. She stepped outside the narrow bounds of being 'proper' and stepped into a much larger, more vibrant way of existing.
As you move through your week, I want to encourage you to look at your goodness not as a set of restrictions, but as a toolkit. Don't just aim to be the person who follows the rules; aim to be the person whose kindness has a purpose. Ask yourself what your unique goodness can achieve today. Are you using your light to warm someone else, or are you just keeping it tucked away behind a wall of perfection? Let your goodness be active, purposeful, and wonderfully alive.
