🙏 Gratitude
Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not. Remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.

Epicurus reminds us that our current blessings were once distant dreams.

Have you ever found yourself staring at something new, perhaps a shiny new gadget or a different career path, while completely forgetting to appreciate the beautiful life you have already built? It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that happiness is always just one more achievement or one more purchase away. Epicurus gives us such a profound reminder when he tells us not to spoil our current joy by longing for what is missing. He invites us to look back at our past selves and realize that many of the things we currently take for granted were once nothing more than whispered prayers and distant dreams.

In our fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with images of perfection, making us feel like we are perpetually lacking. We scroll through social media and see lives that look more polished than our own, and suddenly, our cozy apartment feels too small or our steady job feels too boring. We start chasing the next big thing, forgetting that the very stability we possess today was once something we desperately craved during a time of uncertainty. We become so focused on the horizon that we trip over the treasures right at our feet.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly blue because I hadn't achieved a specific milestone I had set for myself. I was so caught up in the frustration of not being 'there' yet that I failed to notice how much my life had actually changed for the better. I had a warm home, wonderful friends, and a sense of peace that I hadn't possessed a year prior. It was only when I sat down and truly looked around that I realized I was living in the middle of a dream I once had. I was mourning a lack of something new while ignoring the abundance of something old.

It is a gentle practice to pause and reconnect with this sense of gratitude. Next time you feel that familiar pang of envy or dissatisfaction, try to trace your current comforts back to their origins. Think about the person you were a few years ago and what they were hoping for. You might be surprised to find that you are currently standing in the middle of everything you once hoped to achieve. Take a deep breath and let yourself be happy with exactly where you are right now.
