🌊 Resilience
People have a hard time letting go of their suffering out of a fear of the unknown they prefer suffering that is familiar

True resilience sometimes means releasing the comfort of familiar pain

Have you ever noticed how we sometimes cling to things that hurt us? It is a strange, heavy feeling, isn't it? Thich Nhat Hanh captures this human struggle so beautifully when he says that we often prefer the suffering we know over the uncertainty of something new. It is as if our pain has become a worn-out, old blanket. It might be tattered and cold, but at least we know exactly how it fits us. The unknown, on the other hand, feels like a vast, dark ocean, and the fear of what might be lurking beneath the surface can feel much scarier than the ache we are already carrying.

In our everyday lives, this shows up in so many quiet ways. It is in the way we stay in jobs that drain our spirit because we fear the job hunt, or how we remain in stagnant relationships because the loneliness of being single feels too daunting. We build walls out of our old wounds, thinking they protect us, when in reality, they are just keeping us trapped in a cycle of familiar sadness. We mistake the predictability of our misery for safety, forgetting that true safety is found in growth, not in repetition.

I remember a time when I felt quite stuck myself. I was holding onto a very old, bitter grudge against a friend. It was a heavy weight in my heart, but I was terrified that if I let the anger go, I would have to face the emptiness that would follow. I didn't know who I would be without that layer of resentment. It took me a long time to realize that by clinging to that old hurt, I was leaving no room for new joy to enter. I had to learn that letting go isn't about losing something; it is about making space for something better.

As your friend BibiDuck, I want to remind you that it is okay to feel afraid of the change that comes with healing. The unknown is intimidating, but it is also where all your possibilities live. You don't have to leap into the deep end all at once. You can just start by loosening your grip, even just a little bit. Take a deep breath and ask yourself today: what part of my pain am I holding onto simply because it is familiar? You deserve a life that is more than just a collection of survived hardships.
