“The miracle is not to walk on water the miracle is to walk on the green earth dwelling in wonder”
The true miracle is finding wonder in our everyday walk on earth.
Sometimes we spend our entire lives waiting for something spectacular to happen. We wait for the big promotion, the grand romantic gesture, or a sudden burst of magic that will finally make us feel alive. We look toward the horizon, hoping to see something impossible, like walking on water, thinking that only the supernatural can truly change our perspective. But Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us that the real magic isn't found in defying the laws of physics, but in how we choose to experience the world right beneath our feet. The true miracle is the ability to stay present enough to notice the vibrant green of the grass and the simple rhythm of our own breathing.
In our busy, modern lives, it is so easy to become numb to the beauty surrounding us. We walk through parks with our eyes glued to our phone screens, or we rush through our morning commutes with our minds already trapped in a meeting that hasn't even started yet. We become ghosts in our own lives, passing through the scenery without ever actually touching it. We are so focused on reaching the next destination that we forget we are currently standing on a living, breathing planet that is constantly offering us small wonders if we only bother to look.
I remember a Tuesday a few weeks ago when I felt particularly overwhelmed. My mind was a whirlwind of to-do lists and worries, and I felt completely disconnected from everything around me. I was sitting on a wooden bench in the local park, feeling quite heavy. Then, I noticed a tiny ladybug navigating the edge of a bright green leaf. I watched it for what felt like forever, marveling at its tiny, determined movements. In that moment, the weight of my worries didn't disappear, but they certainly shrank. The world felt vast and beautiful again, simply because I decided to stop running and start noticing.
This shift doesn't require a change in your circumstances, only a change in your attention. It is an invitation to reclaim your sense of awe. You don't need to perform miracles to find peace; you only need to inhabit the life you already have. When we cultivate wonder, the mundane becomes sacred, and even the most ordinary day can feel like a gift.
Today, I want to encourage you to take just five minutes to step outside or look out a window. Find one thing that is green, one thing that is moving, or one thing that is breathing. Allow yourself to simply exist within that wonder, and see how much lighter your heart feels.
