🌾 Simplicity
Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone

Sometimes the simplest solution is to stop interfering

Have you ever felt like your mind was a glass of water that someone had just vigorously shaken? Everything is swirling, cloudy, and impossible to see through. When we face confusion, anxiety, or a difficult decision, our first instinct is often to dive in and start stirring. We try to think our way out of the mess, over-analyze every tiny detail, and poke at our problems with frantic energy. But Alan Watts reminds us of a beautiful, quiet truth: muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone. Sometimes, the very act of trying to fix things only adds more sediment to the chaos.

In our modern, fast-paced world, we are taught that productivity and constant movement are the only ways to find answers. We feel this pressure to constantly troubleshoot our emotions and optimize our lives. But much of our mental unrest comes from this unnecessary agitation. When we are stuck in a loop of worry, we are essentially stirring the mud. We think that if we just think one more time, or plan one more step, the clarity will come. Yet, clarity isn't something we create through force; it is something that reveals itself when we finally stop the movement.

I remember a time when I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed by a project. I couldn't sleep because my brain was a whirlwind of 'what-ifs' and 'how-tos.' I spent hours pacing my room, trying to map out every possible disaster. It felt like I was adding more dirt to my own confusion. One evening, I decided to just sit quietly on my porch and watch the sunset, intentionally deciding not to solve a single problem. I didn't try to be productive; I just let the evening happen. By the next morning, without me having done any heavy lifting, the path forward seemed so much clearer. The silt had simply settled on its own.

This doesn't mean we should be passive or ignore our responsibilities. It simply means learning to distinguish between meaningful action and frantic agitation. It is about recognizing when the best course of action is actually a moment of stillness. When life feels murky, give yourself permission to step back. Trust that the sediment in your heart and mind knows how to settle if you just stop stirring the pot.

Today, I want to encourage you to find one area of your life that feels a bit muddy. Instead of reaching for a tool to fix it, try reaching for a moment of peace. Can you sit with the uncertainty for just five minutes without trying to change it? Let the water rest, and see what beautiful clarity emerges when you finally let go.
