The only way to have a friend is to be one.

The karmic law of friendship demands that we give what we wish to receive.

Have you ever sat in a quiet room, scrolling through your phone, and felt a sudden pang of loneliness? It is a heavy feeling, like a small gray cloud hovering over your heart. We all crave deep, meaningful connections, yet we often find ourselves waiting for someone else to reach out first. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s beautiful words, The only way to have a friend is to be one, remind us that friendship isn't something we find lying on the ground; it is something we cultivate through our own kindness and presence.

In our busy, modern lives, it is so easy to become passive observers of other people's lives. We watch their stories and like their photos, but we rarely step into the role of the active supporter. True friendship requires us to be the person who listens without judging, who shows up when things are messy, and who offers a warm smile when the world feels cold. It is about planting seeds of empathy and patience, knowing that the warmth we give out is exactly what will eventually surround us.

I remember a time when I was feeling quite overwhelmed with my writing tasks. I was sitting in my little corner of the pond, feeling very much alone in my struggles. I found myself waiting for a little note or a kind word from a friend to lift my spirits. But then, I realized I hadn't checked in on anyone else lately. I decided to set aside my worries and send a few quick, thoughtful messages to my dear friends just to say I was thinking of them. To my surprise, as soon as I started being that supportive presence for them, I felt the loneliness melt away. The connection I was seeking was already within my reach, waiting for me to extend my hand.

Being a friend means being the light in someone else's darkness, even when you are navigating your own shadows. It means being the person who remembers the small details and celebrates the tiny victories. When we shift our focus from what we are lacking in our social circles to what we can contribute to them, the entire landscape of our lives changes. We stop being hunters of affection and start being creators of community.

Today, I want to gently nudge you to take one small step toward someone else. Perhaps it is a text to an old acquaintance, a sincere compliment to a stranger, or simply a moment of active listening for a loved one. Be the friend you wish you had, and watch how beautifully the world responds to your warmth.
