Quote of the Day
Discover fresh inspiration every day
“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”
Stop running after it so hard. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down, breathe, and let the good things find their way to you.
Have you ever spent an entire afternoon chasing something, only to realize you were running in circles? Nathaniel Hawthorne’s beautiful words about the butterfly remind us that happiness works in much the same way. We often treat joy like a prize to be hunted, a destination we can reach if we just run fast enough or work hard enough. But the more we frantically chase after that feeling of fulfillment, the more it seems to flutter just out of our reach, leaving us breathless and exhausted.
In our daily lives, this looks like the endless cycle of 'I will be happy when...' We tell ourselves we will find peace once the laundry is done, once the promotion arrives, or once we finally lose those five pounds. We turn our lives into a high-speed pursuit, eyes fixed solely on the horizon, completely ignoring the beauty of the meadow we are currently walking through. We become so focused on the pursuit that we forget how to simply exist in the present moment.
I remember a time when I felt quite overwhelmed, much like a little duck lost in a storm. I was trying so hard to fix every problem in my life at once, running from one task to another, desperate to feel a sense of accomplishment. I thought that if I could just finish my list, I would finally feel that spark of joy. But all I felt was fatigue. It wasn't until I decided to stop, sit by the edge of the pond, and just watch the ripples in the water that a sense of calm finally settled over me. The happiness I was hunting didn't arrive because I caught it; it arrived because I finally stayed still enough to let it find me.
This doesn't mean we should stop striving for our dreams, but it does mean we should change our approach to the small, quiet moments. When we cultivate stillness, gratitude, and presence, we create a landing pad for joy. We stop being hunters and start being gardeners, tending to our inner world so that happiness feels at home when it arrives.
Today, I want to encourage you to take a tiny break from the chase. Find a quiet corner, take a deep breath, and just sit for a few minutes. Don't try to solve anything or achieve anything. Just be. You might be surprised at what decides to land on your shoulder when you aren't looking for it.
