Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

Baldwin establishes confrontation as the prerequisite for transformation.

Sometimes, the hardest part of life isn't the struggle itself, but the way we try to look away from it. James Baldwin’s words remind us that while facing a problem doesn't always guarantee a happy ending or a quick fix, it is the essential first step toward any kind of transformation. We often spend so much energy building walls around our fears or pretending that certain shadows don't exist, hoping they will simply vanish if we ignore them. But true change, no matter how small, requires us to turn around, look the difficulty in the eye, and acknowledge that it is there.

In our everyday lives, this shows up in so many quiet, heavy ways. It might be that lingering tension with a friend that we pretend is just a misunderstanding, or a health concern we push to the back of our minds by staying busy. We tell ourselves that if we don't talk about it, it isn't real. But avoidance acts like a fog; it doesn't make the landscape disappear, it just makes us lose our way. When we avoid the truth, we remain stuck in the exact same place, unable to move forward because we are too busy trying to pretend we aren't standing still.

I remember a time when I felt like I was wading through thick, muddy water. I was overwhelmed by a project that felt far too big for me, and instead of asking for help or breaking it down, I just kept pretending I had everything under control. I was exhausted from the performance of being okay. It wasn't until I finally sat down and admitted to myself, and then to a friend, that I was actually struggling, that the weight started to lift. Facing the reality of my burnout didn't instantly finish the project, but it allowed me to stop running and start planning a real way through.

It takes immense courage to be honest with yourself about the things that hurt or the things that are broken. There is a certain vulnerability in saying, I see this, and I don't know how to fix it yet. But please know that this honesty is where your power lives. You don't have to have all the answers right now; you just have to be willing to stop looking away. As you move through your day, I invite you to gently check in with yourself. Is there something you have been avoiding? Take a deep breath and try just acknowledging it today. That small act of courage is the beginning of everything.
