😊 Happiness
Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing frighten you. All things are passing. Patience obtains all things.

Teresa counsels patient equanimity in the face of all disturbance.

Sometimes, the world feels incredibly loud and heavy, as if every little worry is trying to take up permanent residence in our hearts. When we read the words of Teresa of Avila, we are reminded of a beautiful, quiet truth: much of what we fear is actually just a passing cloud. This quote is a gentle whisper to our souls, telling us that the storms we face do not have the power to stay forever. There is a profound peace found in realizing that nothing is permanent, not even the shadows that try to dim our light.

In our everyday lives, it is so easy to get caught up in the frantic pace of modern existence. We stress over a missed deadline, a misunderstood text message, or a sudden change in plans as if these moments define our entire destiny. We let the temporary friction of a bad day turn into a permanent state of anxiety. But if we take a breath and look closer, we see that these moments are just ripples on the surface of a much deeper, calmer lake. The ability to remain undisturbed comes from recognizing the temporary nature of our struggles.

I remember a time when I felt completely overwhelmed by a series of small mishaps. It felt like every little thing that could go wrong was going wrong, and I was certain my peace was lost for good. I was sitting by the pond, feeling quite ruffled and much less like a happy duck, when I noticed how the wind would whip up the water into tiny, chaotic waves, only for the surface to become glassy and still again just minutes later. The wind hadn't changed the pond; it had only passed over it. That realization helped me see that my internal turbulence was also just passing through.

Patience is the bridge that carries us from the chaos to the calm. It is not about passive waiting, but about an active, steady trust that things will settle. When we practice patience, we stop fighting the waves and start learning how to float. We allow the time necessary for the dust to settle and for our perspective to clear. It is through this steady endurance that we eventually obtain the clarity and strength we were seeking all along.

Today, I want to encourage you to take a moment to look at whatever is weighing on your mind. Ask yourself if this moment will matter in a year, or even a month. If the answer is no, try to let it pass through you without letting it take root. Breathe deeply, hold onto your patience, and remember that the sun will always find its way back through the clouds.
