😊 Happiness
If thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires.

Wanting less isn't about deprivation — it's freedom. When you stop chasing every shiny thing, you suddenly realize how rich your life already is.

Sometimes, it feels like we are running a race where the finish line keeps moving further away. We tell ourselves that once we get that promotion, or that bigger house, or that newer car, we will finally be able to sit back and breathe. But Epicurus offers us a beautiful, quiet alternative to this endless chase. He suggests that true happiness isn't found by piling more things onto our lives, but by gently letting go of the endless hunger for more. It is about simplifying our hearts so that what we already have becomes enough.

In our modern world, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements telling us that we are just one purchase away from perfection. It is so easy to fall into the trap of believing that our worth is tied to our collection of belongings. We spend our energy chasing desires that often leave us feeling emptier than before. When we focus on adding, we often forget that every new desire brings a new weight to carry. True lightness comes when we stop asking for more and start appreciating the abundance that is already sitting right in front of us.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed, much like a little duckling lost in a storm. I had spent weeks obsessing over getting a specific new gadget, thinking it would make my daily routine so much smoother and my life much more joyful. I spent hours scrolling through reviews and comparing prices, letting my anxiety grow with every new wish. But when the package finally arrived, the excitement lasted only a few minutes before my mind immediately jumped to the next thing I lacked. It was a lonely feeling, realizing that my happiness was being held hostage by a cardboard box.

That moment taught me that the most peaceful days are the ones where I focus on subtraction rather than addition. It is the joy of a warm cup of tea, the comfort of a soft blanket, or a quiet conversation with a friend. When we prune away the unnecessary wants, we create space for gratitude to grow. We find that the things we once thought were essential are actually just distractions from the peace that is already available to us.

I want to encourage you today to take a tiny step toward this kind of freedom. Perhaps you can look around your space or your mind and identify one small desire that is causing you unnecessary stress. Try to gently set it aside, just for a moment, and see if you can find a small spark of joy in something you already possess. You might be surprised by how much lighter you feel when you stop carrying the weight of 'more'.
