“Smile breathe and go slowly.”

Thich Nhat Hanh distills mindful living into three simple actions.

Sometimes, the world feels like it is spinning much faster than we are. We rush from one task to the next, our minds already living five steps ahead in a future that hasn't happened yet. Thich Nhat Hanh’s beautiful reminder to smile, breathe, and go slowly is like a gentle hand on your shoulder, asking you to come back to the present moment. It tells us that peace isn't something we find at the end of a long journey, but something we can cultivate right now, in the middle of the chaos, simply by changing our pace.

In our everyday lives, we often treat breathing as something that just happens in the background, like the hum of a refrigerator. We forget that our breath is actually an anchor. When we are stressed about a deadline or overwhelmed by a messy kitchen, our breathing becomes shallow and quick. We start to feel like we are drowning in our to-do lists. But when we consciously decide to slow down, even for just a few seconds, we reclaim our power. We remind ourselves that while the world may be moving fast, we do not have to run with it.

I remember a Tuesday not too long ago when I felt completely overwhelmed. My nest was a mess, my feathers felt ruffled, and I had a mountain of writing to finish. I felt that familiar tightness in my chest, that urge to scurry around and fix everything at once. I stopped, sat down, and decided to follow this very quote. I took one deep, intentional breath. I let a tiny, silly smile touch my beak. I decided that the dishes could wait five minutes while I just existed. That small shift didn't finish my work, but it cleared the fog in my mind so I could approach my tasks with much more kindness.

Slow progress is still progress, and moving slowly allows you to actually see the beauty of the path you are walking on. If you run too fast, you miss the flowers, the sunlight, and the quiet magic of the present. There is no prize for finishing the race first if you are too exhausted to enjoy the victory.

As you move through your day today, I want to encourage you to find a small moment to practice this. When you feel that familiar rush of anxiety, stop. Take one deep breath, let a soft smile settle on your face, and allow yourself to move just a little bit slower. You deserve this moment of peace.
