“Think of the life you have lived until now as over and as a dead man see what is left as a bonus and live it properly.”

Aurelius suggests treating remaining time as an unexpected gift.

Sometimes, the weight of our past mistakes, our missed opportunities, and our old versions of ourselves can feel like a heavy backpack we are forced to carry everywhere. Marcus Aurelius offers us a profound way to set that backpack down. When he suggests we view our past life as over, he isn't talking about something tragic or grim. Instead, he is inviting us to embrace a radical kind of rebirth. He is suggesting that we can let go of the person we used to be, the regrets that haunt us, and the expectations that no longer serve us, treating everything we have left as a beautiful, unexpected bonus.

In our daily lives, we often spend so much energy trying to fix or rewrite what has already happened. We replay old arguments in our heads or mourn the way things used to be. But what if we looked at this very moment as a fresh start? Imagine waking up tomorrow and deciding that the person who struggled, failed, or felt lost is simply a character in a book you have already finished reading. That leaves you standing in the present, looking at the sunlight, your breath, and your current opportunities as a precious gift that you didn't necessarily earn, but get to enjoy nonetheless.

I remember a time when I felt quite stuck, much like a little duckling caught in a heavy rainstorm. I was so focused on all the days I had wasted and the things I hadn't achieved that I couldn't see the beauty of the afternoon sun. I was mourning a version of myself that I thought was much more productive and polished. It wasn't until I practiced this very idea—treating my past self as a closed chapter—that I felt the lightness return. I realized that the 'me' standing in the rain was actually a lucky survivor, and the warmth of the sun was a wonderful bonus I shouldn't have taken for granted.

This perspective shifts our entire relationship with time. It moves us from a state of scarcity and regret to a state of abundance and gratitude. When you view your remaining time as a bonus, every cup of tea, every kind word, and every quiet moment becomes much more significant. You stop living for a future milestone and start living deeply within the life that is currently unfolding right in front of you.

As you go about your day, I want to gently encourage you to try this experiment. Take a moment to acknowledge a past regret, and then, with a deep breath, mentally close that book. Look around at your current surroundings and ask yourself how you can live this 'bonus' time with more intention, more kindness, and more presence. You deserve to enjoy the gift of right now.
