🌸 Kindness
“The most common form of despair is not being who you are but the cure is kindness toward yourself”

Self-kindness is the antidote to the despair of inauthenticity.

Have you ever felt like you were wearing a heavy, uncomfortable mask just to please the people around you? That is the quiet, heavy weight Soren Kierkegaard was talking about. When we spend our days trying to fit into molds that were never meant for us, we slowly lose touch with our true selves. This kind of despair isn't always a loud, crashing storm; often, it is a silent, hollow feeling that settles in our chests when we realize we are performing a role rather than living a life. It is the exhaustion of pretending that the person the world sees is the real you.

In our everyday lives, this often shows up in the small, seemingly insignificant choices we make. We might stay silent when we want to speak up, or we might pursue a career path or a lifestyle that looks perfect on social media but feels empty inside. We become experts at curated perfection, leaving our authentic, messy, and beautiful true selves tucked away in a corner where no one can see them. The tragedy is that by hiding our true nature to avoid judgment, we end our own happiness before it even has a chance to bloom.

I remember a time when I felt quite lost, much like a little duckling trying to swim against a current that didn't belong to me. I was so focused on being the most productive, most organized, and most 'together' version of myself that I forgot to check if that version of me was actually happy. I was judging my every mistake with such harshness that I didn't have any room left for joy. It wasn't until I started practicing radical kindness toward my own flaws that I began to feel like myself again. I had to learn that being 'imperfect' was much more rewarding than being 'perfect' but hollow.

The beautiful part of this quote is the promise of the cure. The remedy to this identity-based despair isn't perfection or external validation, but kindness toward yourself. It starts with a gentle inward gaze. It means looking at your mistakes, your quirks, and your vulnerabilities not as flaws to be erased, but as parts of your unique tapestry. When we treat ourselves with the same compassion we would offer a dear friend, the mask begins to slip, and the real us can finally breathe.

Today, I want to encourage you to take a moment to check in with your heart. Ask yourself if you are being kind to the person you truly are, or if you are being too hard on the person you are trying to be. If you find you have been hiding, try to take one small, brave step toward authenticity. Be gentle with yourself as you navigate this journey back to your true self.
