🌸 Kindness
“The real dirt is not outside but inside in our hearts we can wash away all the dirt with kindness”

Inner kindness cleanses what no external washing can reach.

Sometimes we spend so much of our energy trying to clean up our external lives. We scrub our floors, organize our closets, and try to present a polished version of ourselves to the world. But Shams Tabrizi reminds us of a much deeper truth: the real dirt isn't found in the dust on our shelves, but in the shadows we carry within our hearts. This kind of dirt is made of resentment, bitterness, and the small, sharp edges of ego that can accumulate when we are hurting or feeling unloved. It is much harder to sweep away than any physical mess, but it is not impossible.

I think about how easy it is to let a little bit of negativity settle in. I remember a time when I was feeling particularly grumpy and cynical. I found myself judging neighbors for their loud music or feeling irritated by the simple, joyful sounds of birds in the morning. My external world looked perfectly fine, but inside, my heart felt heavy and cluttered with judgment. It was like I had a layer of dust over my soul that made everything look gray. I realized that no amount of cleaning my house would make me feel light again; I had to address the unkind thoughts I was harboring.

The beautiful part of this quote is the remedy provided: kindness. Kindness acts like a gentle, warm rain that can wash away even the deepest stains of bitterness. When we choose to be kind to others, we are actually performing a cleansing ritual for ourselves. A small act, like a sincere compliment or a moment of patience with a stranger, begins to dissolve that internal grime. It is hard to hold onto resentment when you are actively practicing compassion. As I started making a conscious effort to find the good in people, that heavy feeling in my chest began to lift, replaced by a sense of clarity and warmth.

As you go about your day, I want to invite you to check in with your inner landscape. Are there any small pockets of unkindness or bitterness starting to settle in your heart? Don't be discouraged by finding them; simply recognize them. Try to use the power of a small, kind gesture today—either toward someone else or even toward yourself—to help wash that space clean. You might be surprised at how much brighter your world looks once you start tending to the garden within.
