🌸 Kindness
“If your compassion does not include yourself it is incomplete”

Complete kindness must include gentle treatment of ourselves.

Sometimes we think of kindness as a bridge we build toward others, a way to reach out and offer warmth to someone shivering in the cold. We pride ourselves on being the person who listens, the one who forgives, and the one who holds space for everyone else's heavy burdens. But Jack Kornfield reminds us of a vital truth: if that compassion doesn't extend inward to our own hearts, it remains unfinished. We cannot truly pour from an empty cup, and a heart that only knows how to care for others while neglecting itself will eventually run dry.

In our busy, modern lives, it is so easy to become our own harshest critics. We celebrate a friend's small victory with cheers and hugs, yet we meet our own mistakes with a heavy silence or a sharp, internal lecture. We treat our failures as unforgivable sins while treating others' mistakes as mere learning opportunities. This imbalance creates a fragmented kind of love, where we are constantly giving away the very peace we are too stingy to give to ourselves. It makes our kindness feel like a performance rather than a natural overflow of a healthy soul.

I remember a time when I was working so hard to be the perfect helper for everyone in my nest that I completely forgot to check on my own feathers. I was staying up late, worrying about every little thing, and being so incredibly hard on myself whenever I felt tired or unmotivated. I thought that being 'strong' meant ignoring my own needs. It wasn't until I realized that my exhaustion was actually making me less present for the people I loved that I understood the lesson. I had to learn to wrap my wings around myself with the same tenderness I offered to my friends.

Learning to include yourself in your circle of compassion is a quiet, ongoing practice. It means noticing when your inner voice becomes too loud or too mean and gently stepping in to soften the tone. It means giving yourself permission to rest without feeling guilty, and acknowledging your struggles without judgment. When you heal the relationship you have with yourself, your ability to love the world around you becomes much more profound and sustainable.

Today, I want to invite you to take a deep breath and look inward. Is there a part of you that has been left out of your kindness lately? Try to offer yourself just one small moment of grace, perhaps by forgiving a small mistake or simply acknowledging how hard you are trying. You deserve your own warmth, too.
