“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”

Douglass ties all meaningful progress to the willingness to engage in struggle.

When we first hear the words of Frederick Douglass, it can feel a little bit heavy, almost like a weight on our shoulders. It is a blunt reminder that the easy path rarely leads to anywhere meaningful. We often spend so much of our lives praying for smooth sailing and calm waters, hoping that if we just avoid the waves, we will eventually reach our destination. But this quote tells us something much deeper: the waves are actually the very thing that moves us forward. Without the resistance of the current, a boat simply drifts aimlessly. Progress requires the friction of effort, the discomfort of learning, and the courage to face what scares us.

In our everyday lives, we tend to view struggle as a sign that something is wrong. We think that if we are feeling frustrated with a new skill, or exhausted from a long project, or even heartbroken by a setback, then we must be failing. But what if that struggle is actually the sound of growth happening? Think about a tiny seed buried under the dark, heavy earth. To become a beautiful flower, that seed has to push through the dirt, crack its own shell, and fight against the weight of the soil. That process is incredibly difficult and looks nothing like a peaceful afternoon in the sun, yet it is the only way the plant can ever reach the light.

I remember a time when I felt completely overwhelmed by a new creative project I was working on. I kept hitting walls, my ideas felt messy, and I honestly wanted to just tuck my head under my wing and give up. I felt like the difficulty was a signal to stop. But as I sat with that frustration, I realized that the moments where I was most challenged were the exact moments I was learning the most. Each mistake forced me to rethink my approach and sharpen my perspective. The struggle wasn't an obstacle to the work; it was the work itself.

So, the next time you find yourself in the middle of a difficult season, try to breathe through the tension. Instead of asking why this is happening to you, try asking what this struggle is building within you. Are you gaining patience? Are you discovering a strength you didn't know you possessed? Every bit of resistance you encounter is an opportunity to evolve. Take a moment today to look back at a hard time you survived and recognize the progress you made because of it. You are much stronger than the obstacles in your path.
