“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

Keller warns against fixating on what is lost rather than noticing new opportunities.

Have you ever felt that heavy, hollow ache when something you truly cared about suddenly comes to an end? Maybe it was a job you loved, a friendship that drifted away, or a dream that didn't quite bloom the way you imagined. Helen Keller’s beautiful words remind us that loss is rarely the end of the story, even if it feels like the final chapter. She teaches us that while we are busy mourning the closed door, a brand new opportunity is often waiting quietly in the hallway, just waiting for us to notice it.

In our daily lives, it is so incredibly easy to get stuck in that loop of looking backward. We replay our mistakes, we sigh over what might have been, and we keep our eyes fixed on the door that slammed shut. We become so focused on the shadows of the past that we miss the sunlight streaming in from a new opening. It is a natural human instinct to grieve, but there is a subtle danger in letting that grief turn into a permanent blindfold.

I remember a time when I felt quite lost myself. I had been working so hard on a creative project, pouring my heart and soul into every little detail, only to have it fall through due to circumstances completely out of my control. For weeks, I sat in my little nook, staring at my empty desk and feeling like I had failed. I was so preoccupied with the disappointment of that closed door that I didn't realize a new invitation to collaborate with a wonderful group of artists had arrived in my inbox. It wasn't until I finally decided to look up and wipe my eyes that I saw the beautiful path opening right in front of me.

It takes courage to turn your head away from what was lost and face the unknown. It requires a certain level of trust to believe that something good is waiting for us, even when we can't see it yet. Transition can be scary, but it is also the only way we can grow and encounter new joys that we never could have imagined while staying behind the old door.

Today, I want to gently encourage you to take a deep breath and lift your gaze. If you are feeling stuck in a moment of loss, try to pause and scan your surroundings. What small, new possibility might be waiting for your attention? You don't have to run through the new door just yet; simply acknowledging that it exists is a beautiful first step toward healing.
