“Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.”

인생을 두려워하지 마. 인생이 살아볼 가치가 있다고 믿어봐. 그 믿음이 현실을 만들 거야.

Sometimes, the world can feel like a very heavy place, and it is easy to let fear take the driver's seat. When we look at the uncertainties of tomorrow, our instinct is often to pull inward and protect ourselves from potential disappointment. But William James offers us such a beautiful, transformative perspective. He reminds us that our mindset isn't just a passive reaction to what happens to us; it is actually a creative force. When we choose to believe that life is fundamentally worth the effort, we start to notice opportunities and beauty that were previously hidden behind our own shadows of doubt.

I think about this often when I am sitting by the pond, watching the ripples on the water. There was a time not long ago when I felt quite stuck, much like a little duckling unable to find the path to the water. I was so worried about making mistakes or facing setbacks that I stopped trying new things altogether. I had convinced myself that if I didn't expect much, I wouldn't be hurt when things went wrong. But by staying in that shell of fear, I was actually creating a life that felt empty and stagnant. I was making the very gloom I was afraid of come true.

Everything changed when I decided to shift my focus. I started small, by simply telling myself that each day held at least one tiny, wonderful possibility. I began to look for the sunlight hitting the reeds or the kindness of a friend. Slowly, as my belief in the goodness of life grew, my reality began to shift too. I found myself more open to conversations, more willing to explore, and more resilient when small bumps occurred. My belief acted like a compass, guiding me toward a more vibrant way of existing.

It is a profound realization to understand that our optimism is a tool for building our own reality. While we cannot control every storm that comes our way, we can control the lens through which we view the clouds. If you are feeling a bit lost or fearful today, I want to gently encourage you to try a little experiment. Try to find one small thing to believe in. Let your hope be the foundation upon which you build your courage, and watch how the world begins to respond to your light.
