“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”

Take risks and embrace new experiences. Your future self will thank you for the adventures.

Have you ever sat in the quiet of the evening, looking back at a day that passed without much fanfare, and felt a tiny pang of regret? Mark Twain’s words about the weight of unfulfilled dreams really hit home for me. He suggests that our future selves won't be haunted by our mistakes or the times we tripped and fell, but rather by the doors we were too afraid to even knock on. It is a profound way to look at regret, shifting our focus from the fear of failure to the much more significant danger of stagnation.

In our everyday lives, this often shows up in the small, quiet decisions. We stay in jobs that drain our spirit because they are safe, or we keep our true feelings tucked away because we fear rejection. We tell ourselves we will travel, or start that hobby, or reach out to an old friend when the timing is finally perfect. But the truth is, the perfect timing is a myth we use to protect ourselves from the discomfort of trying. We prioritize the safety of the known over the excitement of the unknown, forgetting that the unknown is where all our growth lives.

I remember a time when I was contemplating whether to share my writing with the world. I spent months, even years, hiding my thoughts in little notebooks, terrified that someone might find them and judge them. I was so focused on avoiding the embarrassment of a bad review that I was actually missing out on the joy of connection. It was only when I realized that the silence of not sharing was much heavier than the fear of being critiqued that I finally found the courage to speak up. The mistakes I made along the way were small, but the missed opportunities for connection were what truly hurt.

As your friend BibiDuck, I want to remind you that it is okay to be scared, but please don't let that fear become your permanent resident. Every time you choose a new path, even if it is a bumpy one, you are honoring your future self. You are building a life rich with stories rather than a life filled with 'what ifs.' The scars of trying are much more beautiful than the smooth surface of a life unlived.

Today, I want to encourage you to look at one small thing you have been putting off. Is there a phone call you can make, a class you can sign up for, or a creative project you can start? Don't worry about doing it perfectly; just focus on doing it. Give your future self a reason to smile about the courage you found today.
