“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.”

You're literally not the same person you were yesterday — every single day you're becoming someone new. That's not scary, that's beautiful.

Have you ever stood by a flowing stream and felt like you were looking at something permanent, even though the water was constantly rushing past? Heraclitus had this beautiful way of reminding us that nothing stays still. When he says we never step in the same river twice, he is talking about the beautiful, sometimes scary, reality of constant change. The water is always moving, and more importantly, we are always evolving. Every experience we have, every heartbreak we endure, and every small joy we celebrate reshapes who we are. We are never truly the same person we were yesterday.

In our everyday lives, it is so easy to get stuck trying to hold onto a specific version of ourselves or a specific moment in time. We cling to old habits, old identities, or even old versions of our relationships because they feel safe. But life is a continuous flow. If we try to stand perfectly still while the world moves around us, we might miss the magic of the new scenery. Change isn't just happening to the world around us; it is happening deep inside our own hearts and minds every single second.

I remember a time when I felt quite lost, much like a little duckling caught in a sudden current. I was clinging to a version of my life that no longer existed, mourning a past that was gone. I kept trying to find my way back to 'the way things used to be.' But as I sat with my thoughts, I realized that the person who lived that past life wasn't here anymore. I had learned, I had grown, and I had changed. Once I accepted that the river had moved on, I finally felt free to swim with the new current instead of fighting against it.

It can be overwhelming to realize that we are in a state of perpetual flux, but there is so much peace to be found in it. If you are going through a difficult season right now, please remember that this version of you is not the final version. The river is moving, and this heavy moment will eventually flow downstream, making way for something new. You are being reshaped by your journey, and that is a profound gift.

Today, I want to invite you to take a gentle breath and notice how much you have changed since last year. Instead of resisting the flow, try to embrace the person you are becoming. What is one small way you can welcome the newness in your life today?
