💡 Failure
“A wise man proportions his belief to the evidence”

Let evidence from failures guide beliefs rather than emotions.

Sometimes, our hearts want to believe in the most beautiful, impossible things, and there is nothing wrong with having a little bit of magic in our souls. However, David Hume reminds us of a very grounding truth when he says that a wise man proportions his belief to the evidence. To me, this quote isn't about being cynical or cold; it is about finding a healthy balance between our hopes and the reality right in front of us. It is about learning to trust our intuition while also keeping our eyes wide open to the facts of the world.

In our daily lives, we often fall into the trap of overextending our belief in things that aren't quite ready to be true. We might convince ourselves that a person has changed completely, or that a project will succeed without any extra effort, simply because we want it to be true so badly. When we ignore the evidence, we aren't being optimistic; we are actually setting ourselves up for a much harder fall later on. True wisdom comes from looking at the pieces of the puzzle we actually have, rather than trying to force a picture that doesn't exist yet.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed by a big change in my life. I had this grand idea that everything would just fall into place perfectly without me having to do any of the heavy lifting. I was ignoring all the little signs that I needed to adjust my plan and learn new skills. It was like trying to walk across a pond by pretending the water was solid ground. It wasn't until I stopped and actually looked at the 'evidence' of my own struggles that I could start building a real, sturdy bridge toward my goals.

Learning to weigh what we believe against what we know can be a quiet, transformative process. It allows us to build a foundation of trust that is actually sustainable. When we base our confidence on real, observable progress, our courage becomes much more powerful because it is rooted in something real. We no longer have to fear the moment the illusion breaks, because we are already standing on solid ground.

As you move through your week, I invite you to take a gentle look at the things you are holding onto. Is there something you are believing in so strongly that you are ignoring the reality of the situation? Take a deep breath and try to look at your circumstances with clarity. There is so much peace to be found in simply seeing things as they are, which allows you to make much better decisions for your beautiful journey.
