“An artist should not lie to himself or others”

Creative integrity demands radical honesty with oneself and the world.

When we hear the word artist, our minds often drift to grand oil paintings or sweeping symphonies, but I believe the most profound art is the way we choose to live our lives. Marina Abramovic’s words remind us that the foundation of all true creativity is honesty. To lie to ourselves is to paint over our true feelings with a layer of bright, fake colors, hoping no one notices the cracks underneath. But a masterpiece built on a falsehood can never truly resonate with the soul, because it lacks the heartbeat of truth.

In our everyday lives, we do this far more often than we realize. We might pretend to be okay when we are deeply hurting, or we might curate a version of our daily routine that looks perfect on a screen while feeling hollow inside. We tell ourselves we are happy with a certain path because it is the safe choice, even when our inner compass is screaming otherwise. This kind of self-deception is like using cheap, drying paint on a canvas that deserves something much more enduring. It might look fine for a moment, but it lacks the depth that makes life worth experiencing.

I remember a time when I was trying so hard to be the most productive, energetic duck in the pond. I was telling everyone, and more importantly, telling myself, that I loved the constant hustle and the endless checklists. I was performing a role, acting like a whirlwind of efficiency because I thought that was what a successful creator should look like. But secretly, I was exhausted and felt completely disconnected from the joy of simple things. I was lying to my own heart about what I actually needed to feel whole.

It was only when I stopped the performance and admitted, I am tired and I need rest, that my creativity actually began to flow again. By being honest about my limitations, I could finally start making things that felt real and meaningful. When you stop pretending, you clear away the clutter of pretension and make room for genuine inspiration to settle in.

I want to gently encourage you to look at the areas of your life where you might be wearing a mask. Is there a truth you have been avoiding in the name of comfort? Try to approach your reflection today with kindness rather than judgment. Just start by being honest with yourself about one small thing, and watch how much lighter your spirit feels when you no longer have to carry the weight of a lie.
