🎨 Creativity
“You dont start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking its good stuff. Then gradually you get better. That is the creative process.”

Butler normalizes the creative journey from poor early work to gradual improvement.

Have you ever sat down to start something new, only to feel a heavy sense of disappointment when the first result doesn't match the beautiful vision in your head? Octavia Butler’s words are such a gentle hug for moments exactly like that. She reminds us that greatness isn't a starting point; it is a destination we reach through a messy, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately beautiful series of mistakes. The 'crap' she refers to isn't a failure, but rather the necessary raw material that we shape into something meaningful over time. It is the foundation upon which all mastery is built.

In our daily lives, we often fall into the trap of perfectionism. We want our first meal to be a gourmet feast, our first workout to be effortless, or our first attempt at a new hobby to look professional. We see the finished products of others on social media and forget the mountain of messy drafts they had to climb to get there. This pressure to be perfect right out of the gate can actually paralyze us, making us too afraid to even pick up the pen or try the first step because we are terrified of producing something mediocre.

I remember a time when I decided I wanted to try my hand at watercolor painting. I bought all the prettiest brushes and the most expensive paper, feeling so inspired. But when I pressed the brush to the page, the colors bled everywhere, and my little painted flowers looked more like colorful blobs than actual blossoms. I felt so silly and wanted to hide my sketchbook away forever. But then I remembered that every great artist once stood exactly where I was. I had to let myself paint those messy blobs to learn how water and pigment behave together. Slowly, the blobs started to look a little more like petals, and then a little more like roses.

Creativity is not a lightning bolt that hits you fully formed; it is a slow, rhythmic process of refinement. It is about having the courage to be bad at something until you are no longer bad at it. Every mistake is actually a tiny lesson in disguise, teaching you what doesn't work so you can eventually discover what does. There is so much beauty in the struggle and the learning phase, so please don't be afraid to let your early attempts be imperfect.

Next time you feel discouraged by a lack of immediate skill, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are simply in the middle of your process. Instead of judging your output, try to focus on the act of showing up. Why not pick up that hobby you've been avoiding and give yourself permission to create something truly terrible today? Just start, and let the progress follow.
