🌿 Nature
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.”

Plutarch compares the natural mind to fire that needs igniting rather than filling.

Have you ever felt like you were just collecting facts like pebbles in a pocket? We often go through life thinking that learning is about how much information we can cram into our brains before we go to sleep. But Plutarch’s beautiful words remind us that true wisdom isn't about being a container for data; it is about finding that spark that makes us want to explore, question, and grow. When we treat our minds like a vessel, we are just passive observers, but when we treat them like a fire, we become active participants in our own evolution.

In our everyday lives, this distinction shows up in the way we approach our hobbies, our jobs, and even our relationships. It is the difference between memorizing a recipe and actually feeling the joy of experimenting with new flavors. It is the difference between reading a history book to pass a test and reading it because you are deeply moved by the human struggles of the past. When that inner fire is lit, the world stops being a list of things to remember and starts being a landscape of endless possibilities.

I remember a time when I felt quite stuck, much like a heavy, unlit lantern. I was taking so many courses and reading so many books, but I felt empty and exhausted, as if I were just a bucket being filled with heavy stones. I realized I was focusing so much on the volume of what I knew that I had forgotten to care about why it mattered. It wasn't until I stopped trying to memorize and started trying to connect—linking a small poem to a memory of my grandmother, or a scientific fact to the wonder of a sunset—that the warmth returned. I stopped being a vessel and started being a flame again.

As you move through your day, I want to encourage you to look for those tiny sparks. Instead of asking how much you can learn today, ask yourself what has captured your curiosity or stirred your passion. Is there a topic that makes your heart beat a little faster or a question that keeps you up at night with excitement? Don't be afraid to let that curiosity burn bright. Let us focus less on the weight of what we carry and more on the light we can cast upon the world.
