🌙 Solitude
“If you are lonely when you are alone, you are in bad company.”

This one stings a little, but it's so true. If being alone feels unbearable, maybe it's time to work on your relationship with yourself first.

Have you ever sat in a quiet room, the only sound being the ticking of a clock, and felt a sudden, heavy wave of sadness wash over you? This quote by Jean-Paul Sartre hits a very deep chord within us. It suggests that the discomfort we feel in silence isn't actually caused by the absence of other people, but rather by the presence of our own restless thoughts. When we are alone, we are stripped of all the distractions, the small talk, and the busywork that usually keeps us running. We are left face-to-face with ourselves, and if that version of us feels like a stranger or an unpleasant companion, the silence can feel unbearable.

In our modern, hyper-connected world, we often try to run away from this feeling. We reach for our phones, scroll through endless feeds, or turn on the television just to drown out the quiet. We treat solitude like an enemy to be defeated rather than a space to be explored. We think that if we can just get someone else on the line or join a crowded cafe, the loneliness will vanish. But the truth is, adding more noise doesn't solve the underlying issue of how we relate to our own inner world. If we haven't made peace with our own thoughts, even a crowded room can feel lonely.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed. I had spent the entire day surrounded by friends and family, yet as soon as I closed my bedroom door that night, a profound sense of isolation crept in. I realized I was trying so hard to be 'on' for everyone else that I had completely neglected my own company. I was treating my own mind like a place I wanted to escape from. It took me a long, quiet moment of sitting with that discomfort to realize that I needed to start being a better friend to myself. I needed to learn how to sit in the stillness without judgment.

Learning to enjoy your own company is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give yourself. It involves turning that internal dialogue from a critic into a companion. Instead of viewing solitude as a void, try to see it as a sanctuary. It is a place where you can breathe, reflect, and truly listen to what your heart is trying to tell you without the interference of the outside world.

Tonight, I want to encourage you to try something small. Find just ten minutes to sit in complete silence. No music, no phone, no distractions. Just you and your thoughts. Notice what arises without trying to push it away. See if you can meet yourself with a little bit of kindness, and remember that you are never truly alone if you are at peace with the person sitting right there with you.
