Sometimes, it feels like the whole world is running in one direction, and if you aren't keeping up, you're somehow failing. We are often taught that success means fitting in, being liked by the crowd, and following the paved path that everyone else is walking on. But Marcus Aurelius offers us a much deeper, more grounded perspective. He suggests that the real goal isn't to win a popularity contest or to stand with the largest group of people. Instead, the true aim of our journey is to maintain our sanity, our integrity, and our connection to what is truly real, even if that means standing alone.
In our modern, fast-paced lives, it is so easy to fall into the 'insanity' of the crowd. We see it in the way we scroll through social media, feeling the pressure to mimic every trend, or how we might stay in a toxic job or relationship just because 'that is what everyone does.' We lose ourselves in the noise of collective opinions, forgetting our own inner compass. When we chase the majority, we often trade our peace of consciousness for a sense of belonging that is ultimately hollow and exhausting.
I remember a time when I felt quite overwhelmed by this exact pressure. I was trying so hard to be the person everyone expected me to be—always busy, always performing, always saying yes to every social invitation even when my heart was crying out for rest. I was part of the 'majority' of people who valued busyness as a badge of honor. But in that rush to belong, I felt like I was losing my mind. I was physically present but mentally drifting, disconnected from my own needs. It wasn't until I chose to step back, embrace my own quiet rhythm, and stop seeking validation from the crowd that I finally felt sane again.
Choosing to stay sane means having the courage to say no to things that don't align with your soul. It means recognizing when a popular opinion is actually harmful to your well-being and having the strength to walk your own path. It is much more important to be a person of character and clarity than to be a person who is simply well-liked by a crowd that doesn't truly know them.
Today, I want to encourage you to take a moment to check in with yourself. Ask yourself: Am I following the crowd because I truly believe in this path, or am I just afraid of being left behind? Don't be afraid to be the outlier if it means preserving your inner peace. Your sanity and your truth are worth more than any amount of applause.
