“Wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants”

True wealth comes from accepting simplicity of desire.

Sometimes, we spend our entire lives running toward a horizon that keeps moving further away. We tell ourselves that once we get that bigger house, that faster car, or that specific promotion, we will finally feel complete. But Epictetus reminds us of a beautiful, quiet truth: true wealth isn't found in the pile of things we accumulate, but in the shrinking of our own desires. It is about finding peace in the space between what we have and what we think we need.

In our modern world, it is so easy to feel like we are constantly lacking. We scroll through social media and see curated lives filled with luxury, and suddenly, our perfectly good lives feel small or insufficient. We start craving more, thinking that more stuff equals more happiness. But the more we want, the more we become servants to our own hunger. The weight of maintaining great possessions can often become a burden that prevents us from actually enjoying the life we have already built.

I remember a time when I felt quite overwhelmed by my own 'wants.' I was constantly looking at my tiny desk and wishing for a much grander office, filled with expensive gadgets and fancy stationery. I thought these things would make me feel more professional and successful. But one afternoon, while sitting in a simple patch of sunlight with nothing but a warm cup of tea and a worn-out book, I realized I felt more content than I ever did in my cluttered workspace. The joy didn't come from a new gadget; it came from the stillness of needing nothing else in that moment.

When we practice the art of having few wants, we reclaim our freedom. We stop being reactive to every advertisement and every social comparison. We begin to see the immense richness in a warm meal, a kind word, or a quiet morning. This kind of wealth is something no one can take away from you because it lives entirely within your own heart and your ability to be satisfied.

Today, I invite you to take a small, gentle look at your own life. Is there something you are chasing that is actually making you feel more tired? Perhaps you can try to let go of one small craving and instead, find a moment to deeply appreciate something you already possess. You might be surprised at how rich you truly are.
