“Wherever you go there you are”

Accepting that we bring ourselves everywhere we go.

Have you ever felt like your happiness was just one plane ride, one new job, or one big move away? We often treat life like a scavenger hunt, believing that if we can just reach a certain destination, we will finally arrive at a state of peace. But Jon Kabat-Zinn reminds us with such profound simplicity that wherever you go, there you are. This means that no matter how much our scenery changes, our internal landscape travels with us. We carry our anxieties, our patterns, and our joys in our very pockets, tucked away in the fabric of our being.

It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a change in geography will fix a change in spirit. We think, if I move to a quieter town, I will finally be calm. If I get that promotion, I will finally feel worthy. But the truth is that we bring our same old selves to every new beginning. We bring our restless thoughts and our old habits to the beautiful beaches and the bustling cities alike. The scenery is new, but the person experiencing it remains the same.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed by my responsibilities. I was convinced that a long weekend away in the mountains would be the magical cure I needed to find my center again. I packed my bags with such excitement, dreaming of a version of myself that was perfectly serene and untouched by stress. But as I sat by the campfire, watching the embers glow, I realized my racing thoughts had followed me right up the mountain trail. I couldn't escape my mind by escaping my home. It was a humbling moment that taught me that peace isn't found in a place, but in how I relate to myself in the present moment.

Recognizing this isn't meant to be discouraging; it is actually incredibly liberating. If you are the one traveling with yourself, then you have the power to change the way you travel. You don't have to wait for a new zip code to start practicing kindness toward yourself or to find stillness. You can start right where you are, in your messy kitchen or your crowded office. Today, I invite you to stop looking at the horizon for a moment and instead, look inward. Ask yourself what you can carry with you that is beautiful, and what you might be ready to set down right where you stand.
