“One is not born but rather becomes a woman”

Accepting identity as process rather than fixed state brings freedom.

When we first hear Simone de Beauvoir's words, they can feel quite heavy and profound. To say that one is not born but rather becomes a woman is to acknowledge that femininity is not just a biological destination, but a continuous, beautiful, and sometimes difficult journey of creation. It suggests that the identity we carry is something we shape through our experiences, our struggles, and our choices. It is a reminder that we are not static beings defined solely by our beginnings, but living stories that are being written every single day.

In our everyday lives, this concept shows up in the way we navigate expectations. From the moment we are small, the world begins to whisper to us about how we should act, how we should look, and what our roles should be. We often find ourselves caught between who we were told to be and who we are actually discovering ourselves to be. This process of 'becoming' can feel overwhelming, especially when the societal blueprints feel too tight or too restrictive for our true spirits.

I remember a dear friend of mine who spent years trying to fit into a very specific, polished mold of what a successful woman should look like. She wore the right clothes, spoke with a certain practiced politeness, and followed every unwritten rule of her professional circle. But inside, she felt like a stranger to herself. It wasn't until she began to embrace her messy, creative, and loud side—the parts of her that didn't fit the 'standard'—that she truly started to feel like a woman of substance. She realized that her womanhood wasn't a costume she had to wear perfectly, but a landscape she was allowed to explore freely.

As a little duck who loves observing the wonderful diversity of the world, I see this transformation everywhere. We are all works in progress, constantly shedding old layers to make room for new strengths. There is so much power in realizing that you have the agency to define your own essence. You are not a finished product delivered at birth; you are an architect of your own identity.

Today, I want to gently invite you to look inward. Are there parts of yourself that you have been suppressing to fit a certain mold? Perhaps it is time to let those parts breathe. Take a moment to reflect on one way you have grown or changed recently, and celebrate the beautiful person you are becoming.
