🤲 Acceptance
“For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness”

Accepting rather than resisting preserves precious happiness.

Have you ever felt that heavy, hot sensation in your chest when something just goes wrong? It is that familiar spark of frustration that quickly turns into a simmering anger. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words serve as a gentle, albeit profound, wake-up call for all of us. He reminds us that anger is not just an emotion, but a thief. Every moment we spend gripped by resentment or fury is a moment where joy is physically pushed out of our lives. We cannot hold onto bitterness and happiness at the same time; it is like trying to hold a warm cup of cocoa and a sharp stone in the same hand.

In our daily lives, this theft happens in the smallest, most mundane ways. It might be a driver cutting you off in traffic, a spilled cup of coffee on a Monday morning, or a misunderstood text message from a friend. These tiny flickers of anger feel insignificant in the moment, but when we let them linger, they accumulate. We find ourselves replaying the argument in our heads, fueling the fire, and inadvertently robbing ourselves of the sunset we were supposed to enjoy or the laughter we could have shared with a loved one. We become so focused on the injustice of the moment that we forget to live in the beauty of the present.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly grumpy because a small project I was working on didn't go as planned. I spent the entire afternoon sulking, letting that tiny disappointment cloud my entire day. I was so busy being upset about what went wrong that I didn't even notice how lovely the afternoon light was hitting my desk, or that a dear friend had sent me a sweet note just to say hello. I was physically present, but emotionally, I was stuck in that minute of frustration, effectively throwing away an entire hour of potential peace. It was a silly way to lose precious time, but it happens to the best of us.

As your friend BibiDuck, I want to remind you that you have the power to reclaim those lost seconds. You don't have to pretend that anger doesn't exist, but you can choose not to let it move in and stay for dinner. When you feel that heat rising, try to take a deep, slow breath and acknowledge the feeling without letting it take the driver's seat. Ask yourself if this moment is worth the price of your happiness. Next time you feel a spark of anger, try to let it pass like a cloud, so you can get back to the sunlight waiting for you.
